The Center for Media Advocacy for Mother and Child (CAMAC) has lamented the plight of millions of women who were widowed and children orphaned by the COVID 19 pandemic all over the world.
The centre quoted a UNICEF report which stated that additional 10 million child marriages may occur in the next decade because of school closures and threat to meaningful existence of the affected children.
In an official statement to mark this year’s International Women’s Day, with the theme “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world” signed by the Executive Director, Alex Uangbaoje, the organisation also expressed concern over the increase in gender violence against women and female genital mutilation especially in Africa.
It called for proper legislations in developing world to protect the interest of women around the globe.
CAMAC also appealed to government at all levels in Nigeria to give support to women groups and organisations in order to better their lot in the society.
