FUOYE Moves Against ICT Fraudsters, Cultists, Seeks DSS, Police Intervention



In a bid to tackle criminal elements and ensure improved education standard, the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has sought the intervention of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Police to deal with suspected internet fraudsters and cultists among students of the institution.

Also, to ensure smooth take off of the proposed College of Medicine,the institution is to sign a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti(FETHI), for temporary use of the facility to train their pioneer students

The Varsity is proposing  another MoU with the Ekiti State Government to boost agriculture and ensure food security to make  Ekiti the food basket of the nation through partnership in terms of training of personnel, research and community support.

The new FUOYE’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Sunday Abayomi Fashina, who said this, on Saturday, at a press conference, where he unveiled his agenda, promised that criminalities would be uprooted completely under his leadership.

The Professor of Soil Science, said: “We have written to the DSS and police to help us deal with cases of suspected yahoo boys and cultists. we are noticing such tendencies and we will deal with it, because we won’t compromise standard”.

Fashina said his administration won’t run a course without prognosis and assurances to get accreditation, saying he has begun talk with Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCAN) for the running of the College of Medicine in the university.

“We are going to sign MoU with FETHI for temporary use of their facility to begin our medical college. We appreciate the Oye Community for donating 100 hectares of land  to this university for the building of our own teaching hospital .

“We are sure that we will get accreditation within the shortest time we begin the College. The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences we just established  will serve as a launchpad for the College of Medicine”.

On food security policy of his administration, Fashina said: “We are going to partner Ekiti on food security. I played major role in the establishment of the Ekiti State School of Commercial Agriculturein Isan Ekiti. In Ekiti agriculture is key and we as a university must play our own role.

“We are going to set up an institute for commercial Agriculture in FUOYE that would carry out community services, extension, research,  teaching of farmers,  to achieve food security status for Ekiti” .

Fashina promised that   he would unite and strengthen the factionalised  Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the university, to ensure stable academic calendar and peace on campus, saying he has begun a process of reconciliation among contending forces.

“FUOYE graduates are one  of the best in the world and they are doing well in high flying universities in Britain, USA and others  in Masters and PhD degrees. We have to sustain this through motivation.

“Under my leadership, we will have one day Vice Chancellor among the students. The process for emergence will be thorough. We are going to have scholarships and institute series of awards to motivate our staff and students, so that they can give our their best”.

On how to fund the university for effective performance, the academic revealed that the university will explore opportunities in part time programmes, affiliations  with Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, pre degrees and other programmes to rake in revenues  to run the institution.

“We are not going to charge high tuition fee. I am a product of Chief Obafemi  Awolowo  free education and I am not going to place heavy burden on poor oarents.

“Our vision is to institute work- study programmes, block all leakages and maintain good relationships with TETfund, alumni association  to fund projects in FUOYE . We are not also going to joke with research. I have through researches attracted grants worth several millions of dollars to this university”.
