The recent negative reaction credited to the former Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) President, Dr Omede Idris on the establishment of College of Medicine in the newly established Confluence University of Science and Technology Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state, if true is appalling.
A Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology with Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Shika, Zaria, Prof. Solomon Avidime said If he’s not misquoted, it represents a biaised view of a positive step taken in the right direction.
Avidime said the step taken by the Governor  to establish the College of Medicine in the new University is highly commendable as this is opening up the state for medical tourism in the nearest future.
According to him, the medical school will attract highly skilled medical personnel to the state for training purposes and it will improve the quality of healthcare service.
The Gynecologist said this will complement the existing Medical College in the Kogi State University, and that he’s aware that the Federal University Lokoja is also at the point of establishing a Medical College.
“The sum total of this will be a state that will provide highly specialised human resource for training and the provision of effective and efficient medical services across the length and breadth of the state.
“This will serve the entire nation looking at the startegic location of the state as gateway to many other states.
“Kogi State will then be a destination of choice for medical tourism in Nigeria boasting of three Medical Universities and University Teaching Hospitals”.
Professor Avidime said he has the belief that the ongoing remodeling and reconstruction of the Okene General Hospital will reposition it to serve as the teaching hospital for the medical college of the  Confluence University of Science and Technology Osara.
He expressed   happiness with the development which he  described as visionary and that it should be commended by all citizens.
Reacting to this development, Prof Mike Ogirima  said with more institutions of this type, the better for Kogi State to have enormous human and material resources to make them functional.
