The Joint National Association Of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD) Kaduna State Chapter, has requested the urgent intervention of the Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasiru el-Rufai with other prominent personalities over the recent threat by the Kaduna South Local Government to seize the destitute centre allocated to the association.
The destitute centre which is located at Zango Road Kinkinau GRA off Unguwan Mu’azu, was allocated to the association as state secretariat and skills acquisition centre by the state government in 2006 and sometime between 2009/2010 was repatriated through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
In a letter signed by JONAPWD Kaduna State chairman Abdulazeez Suleiman to the state governor, he explained that the destitute centre was re-allocated to the association in 2011 through the Rehabilitation Board, but now being targeted for confiscation/grabbing by the Kaduna South Local Government’.
Suleiman added that the legacy being achieved has taken their members off the street as they now enjoy better livelihood for over ten years but now being threatened by the strange resolve from the Kaduna South Local Government Council to take over the property.
He said, ” the building which was facilitated for our community with the support of Kaduna State Rehabilitation Board was shared among the various cluster groups of the disabled community.
“The physically challenged built the front building which are later the development made by the disability community to improve the use of space.
“We are agitated because prior to now, we had no knowledge of any claims the council has on this promising community space. What makes the development more alarming, a workshop shade for the blind which has existed for over 32 years was demolished and taken by the same local government.
“We believe that the effort of the Kaduna State Government in social protection and human capital development will be in jeopardy when local government who are ought to improve the opportunities for results, are bent on targeting support structures and system in place for person with disability and vulnerable persons to thrive. ” He said.
According to the letter, they seek the urgent attention of the Kaduna State Government including the state House of Assembly, traditional leaders and organized civil society to the imminent threat towards the survival and dignity of the PWDs.
Furthermore, they appealed to the State Governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, the Deputy Governor, and chairperson of Human Capital Development Council, the Speaker Kaduna House of Assembly, the honourable commissioner, Ministry for Human Services and Social Development to come to their aid and defense of the defenceless persons living with disability in the state.
JONAPWD also pleaded with the Kaduna South Local Government Council to rescind the decision and begin to make efforts to improve the opportunities for persons with disability and other vulnerable groups in the local government area to thrive socio-economically in the existing disadvantage of sharp inequalities.
