Rapist in Jigawa State will face life imprisonment, if the proposed against “violence against persons prohibition law is assented by Governor Badaru Abubakar.
The bill stipulates death penalty for rape convicts who will be found guilty of offence in infecting their victims with HIV/ AIDS.
This follows the adoption of the report of the House Committee on Justice and Judiciary. The committee headed by Barr. Abubakar Jallo a member representing Hadejia Constituency in the House has seven other members.
The bill was unanimously agreed by all the 30 members of the House representing 27 council areas of Jigawa State.
The bill with 58 recommendation’s including life imprisonment for rape offenders, and death sentence without an option of fine for infecting rape victims with HIV/AIDS now awaits Governor Badaru for his consent.
Shedding more light, the House Committee Chairman on Judiciary, Hon. Barr. Abubakar Jallo said rape victims under the proposed law would be compensated with not less than N500,000, while the court would order rape offender to be subjected to public shame in whatever form.
Some parents among other members of the public have welcomed this development, saying it will go a long way in curtailing rampant abuse of rape cases in Jigawa State as the state is recording high increase in raping, among commuting other attrocities.
But to Mal Shehu Takur, the issue is far beyond enacting a law to checkmate increase in social delinquency, but enforcing the law on public to observe is all what they want to witness.
“Let government, and judiciary act positively for the full implementation of this laudable initiative as it will improve upon public moral conduct, and cleanse the society from unruly moral behavior”.
