Police command in Akwa Ibom State has said that it would no longer tolerate jungle justice act carried out by some irate mob in the state against suspected criminals.
The Command statement in Uyo, signed by its Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko MacDon stated that the Commissioner of Police, Amiengheme Andrew is piqued by the recent increase in the resort to jungle justice by the irates mob.
Consequently, he warned that “henceforth all perpetrators of jungle justice will be identified, apprehended and prosecuted”.
“The Commissioner of Police notes, that jungle justice is a travesty of justice, as it does not guarantee fairness to anyone and may lead to the death of an innocent person(s).
“He sees the act as a descent into the Hobbesian state of anarchy and will therefore not be tolerated as it negates the subsisting constitutional provisions and has no place in our criminal justice administration, the statement added.
The CP, however appealed to members of the public to be law abiding and always handover suspected criminals when caught to the Police for diligent prosecution.
Recall that no fewer than 10 suspected criminals have been killed through jungle justice in different parts of Uyo, the state capital and its environs within last December and this month.
All these occurred before police could arrive the scene. Victims were alleged by the angry mob of offences ranging from armed robbery, burglary to handsets snatching among others.
The mob used petrol and condemned motor tyres to set the suspects ablaze after beating them to a coma.
