Governor Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State has advised people in the state to embrace farming as a business investment to ensure food security and enhance economic well being.
Speaking on the occasion of N45 billion rice loan by CBN to farmers in Jigawa State, he stated that his administration has introduced a number of initiatives aimed at improving yields and provide farmers with new farming techniques.
He also cautioned farmers to utilize the loan appropriately for the purpose intended and repay back at a stipulated time for others to benefit.
Earlier, the CBN programme coordinator, Alh Abdu Amadu said the N45 billion rice production loan was in line with the bank’s anchor borrower programme introduced in 2015 to support peasant farmers in the country.
He explained that in the last two years, Jigawa State Government has refunded over 700 million to the bank following the supply of sub standard wheat seeds to farmers under anchor borrowers programme.
He also called on the state ministry, agencies, and other stakeholders to cooperate with the bank on loan recovery.
In his short remarks, the state Chairman of Farmers Association of Nigeria represented by Malam Muhammed Awwal said the rice farmers have expressed gratitude to President Buhari and governors of Jigawa and Kebbi states for their continued support towards agricultural development in the country.
He said that with the introduction of anchor borrowers and cluster farming the association has over one hundred thousand members in Jigawa State.
