National Assembly lawmaker, Mr Onofiok Luke has lauded the appointment of Mr.Abdulrasheed Bawa as Substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), saying it is a major statement of youth inclusion in governance which has been advocated.
This was contained in statement issued by Aniekan Udofia, Special Assistant on Media to Mr Luke and made available to New Nigerian in Uyo on Thursday.
Luke who is the Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary and member representing Etinan Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom state in the House of Representatives said the appointment of forty-year old Bawa  has been received by many youths as turning point in the nation’s democracy.
The National Assemblyman while congratulating Mr. Bawa on his appointment commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the choice of Bawa to lead the nation anti-graft agency.
President Buhari forwarded the nomination of the young antigraft Chief to the National Assembly for confirmation. Luke said “the action of the President is a major statement of youth inclusion in governance which has been advocated.”
He encouraged Bawa not to fail in his new responsibility, noting that he carries a generational burden as his success will further convince elders to cede more critical national responsibilities to younger people in the country. He warned that failure for Bawa to perform will inadvertently hinder others from accessing weighty opportunities as campaign for youth participation in leadership intensifies.
The Federal lawmaker called on youth in the country to rally round and support the nomination of Bawa until his confirmation. He said that the nomination should rekindle their believe in the nation and dream of a better country.
Luke expects Bawa’s appointment to reinvigorate the agency, while his 17 years prosecutorial and investigative experience align the agency to global best practices in graft management which include due diligence, professionalism, and non conformity to partisanship. He stressed that partisanship derails focus and nullifies bipartisan consensus on a disinterested Commission dedicated to tackling corruption in the country.
He described the task ahead of the EFCC czar as herculean but not altogether insurmountable should he call to bear his youthfulness, robust operational intelligence as a Pioneer Cadet of EFCC Institute as well as dependence on provisions of the law.
The Judiciary Committee Chairman in the Green Chamber of the National Assembly assured the Commission of continued support on providing legislative backing to make the Commission function effectively while appreciating the President for nominating for confirmation a substantive EFCC Chairman after six years without substantive leadership.
