Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State has said that the recent beauty pageant it organised in the council area was aimed at empowering the girl-child to enable them become meaningful citizens of the country.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Local Government Area, Alhaji Olusola Rosulu Idowu when the 2020 winner of the competition was officially presemted to the press.
According to the Chairman who was represented by the Executive Secretary of the council, Alhaji Sikiru Lawal noted that they decided to organise the event knowing fully well that when you empower a girl, you”ve empowered a nation which is one of the cardinal points of his administration.
He also explained that his council as part of it”s youth empowerment have sponsored many youths in vocational training and purchased JAMB and GCE forms for many of them and sponsored others for vocational training to make them self employ and useful citizens.
“My administration is mindful of the fact that to keep the youths busy and make them stay off crime and other social vices, you need to keep them busy and self employed and that’s why at Ojo LGA, we take the issue of waste to wealth serious.
“As part of our determination to empower the youths, we’ve sent many of them on vocational training and we’re also waiting for approval from the state government for the establishment of an additional vocational centre in Ward B popularly known as Agric”, he explained.
In his own remarks, CEO of Venux Beauty, organisers of the pageant, Chuks Nwaigwe while commending the council boss for supporting the initiative, said they organised the event to give girls in the council area sense of belonging and serve as role models for other girls in the state.
Winner of the beauty competition, Princess Gume Godswill said she will be working with some Doctors and Nurses on a project titled ‘Pad the Girl’ in selected secondary schools in the council area to teach young girls on how to take care of themselves.
Highlght of the event was the unveiling of Miss Ojo bill board in front of the council secretariat.
