Internal crisis has rocked the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Abdu Gusau Polytechnic Talata Mafara Chapter in Zamfara State over alleged fund mismanagement by the chairman, Malam Ukashatu Barau.
The petition by a former secretary of the union, Sirajo Abdullahi Shinkafi has led to the postponement of the congress earlier scheduled to hold on Thursday 11th February.
The petition which is addressed to the ASUP Zone A Coordinator and National President is seeking the ASUP National executive and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC ) Sokoto Zone to investigate the matter for necessary action to avoid internal conflicts between members and the chairman..
The petitioner alleged that the chairman of the chapter did not pay the sum of N500,000 contributed by the members to offset the ASUP National body outstanding dues since December 2019.The also alleged that the chairman refused to account the union monthly check off dues for the year 2020 which amounted to N4,860,000.
“It is noteworthy to point out that since the money was released to him there was not any presentation of payment evidence (invoices) to the Congress for which he refused to call for congress meeting for over one year now under the guise of escalation of COVID -19 pandemic in Nigeria but surprisingly travel to Dubai for an international conference where he was more susceptible to Corona virus attack than at the Congress meeting that last not more than three hours,” the petitioner said.
The petitioner said the failure of the chairman to hold regular Congress contravenes section 8.05 of the ASUP construction which states that regular meeting of NEC/ZEC/chapter congresses shall be held quarterly.
In his reaction through phone conversation, the chairman, Malam Barau dismissed the allegations by the petitioner describing it as a deliberate attempt to malign him and cast assertion on his personality.
