Comrade Idongesit Ashameri, The Daily Independent Newspaper Correspondent in Uyo, has been re-elected for a second tenure in office as the Chairman, Correspondents’ Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council on Monday.
Ashameri polled a total of 22 votes cast out of 22 total accredited votes to emerge winner top of her opponent, Comrade Tony Etim of Southern Examiner who had, few minutes to the election withdrew his candidacy from the race.
Tony, who sent his withdrawal to the Chairman and Secretary of the Credentials Committee, Comrade Inemesit Akpan-nsoh and Patrick Titus respectively via online channel said his decision to withdraw from the contest was on personal ground.
Meanwhile, The Chairman of the State Council of the Union, Comrade Amos Etuk has described the just elected Chairman, Comrade Idongesit Ashameri as an asset to the Union and a voice whose wealth of experience and contributions during SEC meetings have helped to reposition the Union in the State for the best.
Amos who led a delegation of Council officials to supervise the election which took place at the Chapel Secretariat in Uyo, described the exercise as free, fair and credible.
Etuk charged the Chairman and other elected officers to work in unity by carrying all members along in the activities of the Chapel as there’s no victor and no vanquish after elections.
He called on members of the Chapel to support the Chairman to succeed bearing in mind that it is God who gives and qualifies Leaders.
Also speaking, former Chairman of the State Council and Correspondent of the Sun, Comrade Joe Effiong congratulated the winners, and commended the orderliness and timely conduct of the election as well as the emergence of a preferred candidate in the person of Comrade Idongesit Ashameri and other Executives.
He described the Chairman of the State Council, Comrade Amos Etuk as a steadfast and objective leader whose chairmanship has continued to reposition the the Union for the best since the inception of his leadership in August, 2019.
In her post election speech, newly elected Chairman, Comrade Idongesit Ashameri pledged that she would continue to do her best to better the lots of members and called for continued support to the executive from members.
She thanked members for the confidence reposed in them to pilot the affairs of the Correspondents’ for another three years as provided by NUJ Constitution.
