There was a mild drama at the Oyo State Government’ secretariat in Ibadan on Monday as physically challenged persons from across the state barricaded the main entrance into the secretariat during a protest.
New Nigerian learnt that the physically challenged persons stormed the Secretariat to protest their alleged being short changed in the recently held recruitment exercise into the Oyo state Teaching and Non teaching service commission.
The protest led to heavy traffic jam into the secretariat as well as along the Agodi-government Secretariat road and the Secretariat – Queen Elizabeth road.
Following the protest, security agents comprising of men of the Oyo State command of the Nigeria police force, DSS personnels, Amotekun Corps and NSCDC were drafted to the main gate of the Secretariat to prevent break down of law and order
According to the protesting physically persons , the state government should allocate more slots in the non-teaching arm of the Oyo State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), claiming that some of them applied as non-teaching staff of TESCOM but were allegedly disqualified by the commission even before the commencement of the recruitment exercise.
One of the protesting physically challenged persons, Adegbuyi Adekunle told newsmen that the protest was as a result of suspected foul play against the physically challenged persons in the recruitment exercise
“We are protesting because of the TESCOM appointment. The non-teaching job. Most of our people are not giving the appointment. Instead of giving to our, the disabled, the able people have taken over.”, he said
According to him, “they supposed to give us 5 per cent. That is 350. They gave us 149 instead of 350. That is the reason why we are here. We want the Governor to prevail. We want the Governor to intervene.”
