*cautions against fake news, yellow journalism

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde on Monday charged journalists to use their pen to build, develop and not to destroy Nigeria .
Declaring open the 2020 Oyo NUJ Press Week at the Council’s Press centre, Iyaganku in Ibadan, Governor Makinde emphasized that journalists have a great role to play in developing Nigeria.
The governor stressed that journalists are in the position of moulding the opinion of the people towards fostering the needed unity, peace and development of Nigeria
“Though we cannot expect journalists to build roads and infrastructures, because it is the primary responsibility of government but you have your role to play. Use your pen to build and not to destroy Nigeria.”, he said.
Governor Makinde emphasized that journalists being the mirror of the society should discharge their duties diligently and focus more on things that will build the nation for Nigeria to achieve greatness by staying away from fake news and yellow journalism.
He stated further that the time has come for all and sundry in the country to rise to the rising security challenges in and across Nigeria considering what was witnessed during the recent EndSARS protests in the country.
According to the governor, it was glaring that with the present situation in and across Nigeria, no one is safe hence the need for all and sundry to rise to the challenges
“If we continue with this path, no one is safe in Nigeria. We need to change our course. We all have role to play in developing Nigeria”.
Towards addressing the insecurity in Oyo state, Governor Makinde said Oyo state government will soon commence biometric registration for motorcyclists in the state.
“We want to know the Okada people in Oyo state. We want to have identify management of Okada people in Oyo State. Their biometric will be captured. It is true we have business friendly environment but we must know them”.
In his address, Oyo State NUJ Chairman, Comrade Ademola Babalola assured that journalists in Oyo State will continue to play their expected roles towards reshaping the country for better.
The Oyo NUJ Chairman commended Governor Makinde for his support for the media, adding saying “Nigeria can only develop if all regardless of their background play their parts.”
