Engineer Tegbe while announcing the donation for the Journalist support fund which is an initiative of the Demola Babalola-led Executives of the Nigerian Union of Journalist, Oyo State Council advocated for improved welfare for journalists in the State.
The APC Chieftain stressed in his address at the annual Press Week of the Oyo state NUJ that as ” the famed fourth Estate of the realm, the role played by the press in the establishment and deepening of democracy and development is well documented and deserves to be celebrated”.
According to Engineer Tegbe, “the challenge of development continually requires the contribution of all, and journalists play an important role in this. In this age of increased misinformation”
“It is important that journalists live true to their creed, and their responsibilities as the watchdog of the society and convey news without falsehood and without fear”, he said.
Engineer Tegbe added, “conclusively, I must note that our journalists deserve better welfare. I am committed to support the Oyo State Chapter in this regard. To kick-start the Journalist Support Funds (an initiative of the Demola Babalola-led Executives), I am making a donation One Million Naira. We will continue to support the media in our own way.Congratulations and have a productive week ahead”,
Speaking, the Oyo NUJ Chairman Comrade Ademola Babalola said the initiative was part of his executive’s gesture towards ensuring better welfare for journalists in Oyo State.
The Oyo state NUJ Chairman lamented that the COVID 19 crisis is still affecting many journalists with some sent package by their organisations, others placed on half salaries while many others were owed months salaries thereby making it difficult to meet their needed financial obligations.
Comrade Babalola stated that with the initiative which was one of his cardinal campaign points during the electioneering period, Oyo NUJ will be in a better position to offer financial assistance to the needy members in the form of soft loans.
