President of Squash Racket Federation, of Nigeria, Boye Oyerinde has said that his target next year is to pursue aggressive grassroots development of the racket game, even as he lamented the poor attention paid to other sports apart from football by the government.
He expressed this to New Nigerian Sports that it is unfortunate other sports could not get a quarter of financial support of what football is getting, noting that it will not help in sports development neither will it help our athletes compete favourably with their counterparts from other countries at international competitions.
“It’s unfortunate that government at all levels over the years has not deemed it fit and proper to invest a quarter of what they put into football in other sports combined together.
Oyerinde, who regretted that COVID-19 pandemic slowed down his Federation’s plan for this year, noted that his plan for next year is to consolidate on the achievement recorded last year which will involve massive grassroots development of the sports.
” I’m happy that since we came on board in 2017, squash has witnessed a lot of improvement in the country. last year alone we organized about seven tournaments and would have organized more this year if not for COVID-19 pandemic that affected every aspect of live.
The squash boss while expressing happiness that the game under his watch has been made a permanent sports at the National Sports Festival, however regretted the state of squash courts in the country.
” I want to tell you that we’ve achieved a lot since I took over the mantle of leadership. Right now, squash has been made a permanent sports at the national sports festival while we also have a functional web site and data base and ranking for players and we’ll continue to improve but there is need for government to fix the squash courts of National Stadium Lagos and Abuja for the game to move forward.
