Nasarawa Commissioner Urges Timber, Charcoal Contractors to Maintain Rules of Engagement

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi A. Sule

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources Honourable Musa Ibrahim Abubakar has called on timber and Charcoal contractors in the state to operate within the confines of the rules of their engagement.

The Commissioner, who made this disclosure in his office when he received the Association of Timber contractors (Nasarawa State Chapter) led by Mr. Felix Kassam in Lafia, said that Nasarawa State would not work with any contractor that is not ready to adhere to the rules of engagement.

”Nothing but total implementation of government policies will be accepted; your activities have direct bearing with our climate change and our ozone layer has been affected because of your activities of cutting down trees without replacement”, He said.

He warned them to stick to the laid down policies of their operations that are formulated to help boost the revenue generation of the state.

In a related development, the ministry has put a stop to charcoal production in the state with immediate effect.

The Commissioner said this became necessary in view of its heavy greenhouse emissions to the citizens.

He reaffirmed that anybody seen producing charcoal will be arrested and prosecuted according to the relevant laws of the ministry.
