Uneasy calm is now reigning at the University of Ibadan campus over palpable tension over the selection of a new Vice Chancellor for the Institution.
Men of the Oyo State Joint security outfit, Operation Burst, operatives of the DSS and other security agencies were sighted mounting surveillance on the Trenchard hall venue of the election for the selection of a new Vice Chancellor.
New Nigerian learnt that the tension in the nation’s Premier University might not be unconnected with the determination of some forces in the community to resist the alleged planned imposition of a new Vice Chancellor as against the popular choice of the University community.
At the Wednesday’s planned elections, it was gathered that it was confusion galore within and outside the hall following a purported letter from the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, through the Nigeria University Commission (NUC) directing fresh selection process for the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor following numerous petitions against the initial selection process.
Sources said the atmosphere at the venue of the election became charged when four members of the Governing Council of the University comprising of two external members appointed by the federal government Dr Jaju Muhammad and Prof Mande Samaila and two internal members of the council Professor Ademola Aremu and Professor Abel Olorunnisola walked out of the hall midway to the election.
The 4 Governing Council members were said to have insisted that the Council maintain absolute control and act according to the letter from the Federal Government through the National Universities Commission and Federal Ministry of Education which mandated the Council to review the entire process including re-inviting shortlisted 18 candidates for the VC position.
Sensing that those moderating the election process are not ready to comply with the Federal Government directive on the selection of the new Vice Chancellor, the four Governing Council members walked out of the meeting .
The protesting Governing Council members were said to have insisted that the Senate was wrong to have hurriedly met and the election did not follow due process, stressing , nfact the election is already generating fresh crisis as many contestants pulled out of the election citing violation of FG directive and illegal process as reasons.
“They felt that Federal Ministry of Education instructed Council to review it and not the Senate. In fact the Letter from the Federal Ministry of Education was not even presented for discussion at the Council meeting until they raised issues on the validity of the election being held on campus.
Rather than allow the Council to act on petitions relating to the election, the Vice Chancellor was alleged to have only briefed the Council Chairman who was said the have health challenge at the time.”
As at the time of sending this report, tension is still within the University as the Unions within the University community are still vowing to resist the planned imposition of a new Vice Chancellor till the end of the tenure of the out going Vice Chancellor.
