A legal Practitioner, Barrister Foluso Olapo on Wednesday advocated immediate review of Nigeria’s economic policy by the Federal Government.
The legal practioner expressed this while delivering a lecture entitled “Community Development and Sustainability” at this year’s 2020 Press Week and Award ceremony of the National Association of Women Journalists, (NAWOJ), Oyo State.
According to Barrister Olapo, the economic policy review should be fashioned in a way that will allow and make local industries in and across the country thrive, adding that the time has come for government to address sustainable development in our community by deciding on which of the pillars of development to be addressed.
“In my view, I see the issue of poverty, unemployment, health, infrastructural deficit in the areas of lack of clean water, power supply, security and good roads as crucial. Secondly, we need to look at the areas of economic activities in which we have comparative advantage over other localities or communities and rebirth them,” he said.
The legal practitioner noted “if I may say, the states in the South West of Nigeria, from history have been towering in cash crops like maize , yam , cassava and so on”, adding, “but, reviving the agricultural sector will not be sustainable if “effective marketing board which will help to create access to foreign market, if functional agro allied industries that will purchase the farm produce are not in place”.
“If the issue of power failure which is responsible for the drift of our manufacturing industries to neighbouring countries is not resolved. If government fails to address the issue of multiple taxation, high commercial interest rates and farmers security against cattle rustlers”.
The lecture also witnessed the presentation of awards and plaques to the Oyo State Commissioner for Women Affairs as well as the State CSDA Chairman, Honourable Babatunde Esuola and the commissioning of a new toilet build by the Oyo State NAWOJ.
