National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Office in Bauchi said that it successfully treated 109, out of the 274 complaints it received on human rights issues or abuses from January this year to date.
Giving the figure to newsmen on Tuesday in Bauchi is the State Coordinator of the Commission, Mrs. Yahcit Susan Dala while speaking on preparations to celebrate this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and World Human Rights Day.
Mrs. Susan Dala who explained that most of the cases were on human rights abuses, expressed concern over the increase in rape cases, as well as arbitrary arrest and detention of citizens.
The commission coordinator therefore called on the people of Bauchi state to take advantage of the commission’s services which, she said, are free of charge, as well as the need to create awareness against women and girls’ rights abuses
According to her, the National Human Rights amended Act has given it the legal teeth or powers to protect the rights of Nigerians irrespective of any differences.
She said that the celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is meant to create awareness against women and girls’ rights abuses.
