Ogun Govt Moves To Improve Livehood With Carbon Fund Bonus

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State

Ogun State Government has disclosed  its desirability to improve forest’s community-based livelihood, through the carbon fund bonus of the Federal Government and United Nations’ Carbon Credit Programme.

Commissioner for Forestry, Hon. Tunji Akinosi, stated this when declaring open a 3-Day field training on National Forest Carbon Inventory Techniques and Data Collection for REDD+ Readiness Programme, in Abeokuta.

Akinosi said the programme was aimed at encouraging developing countries to reduce emissions resulting from continuous tree felling without replacing them, in order to enhance, sustain, conserve and guarantee the protection of forest-dependent communities.

According to him, the Carbon Stock Project must be taken seriously as a business for all, saying, the carbon generated from trees would come as grants in form of fund into the State’s coffers, through the United Nation’s Carbon Credit Programme.

The Commissioner noted that the political will and commitment of the Dapo Abiodun led administration for sustainable forest management, had contributed to the prequalification and final selection of the State, during the recent scoping mission assessment.

In his remarks, the National Coordinator of REDD+ Programme, Dr. Moses Ama, said notable States in Forest Management and Development Strategies had continually sensitised people on the need for communal forest protection and sustenance, towards gaining more grants in the Carbon Sustainability Project.

Dr. Ama advised that it is crucial to cater adequately for the climate change mitigation programme in the State’s annual budget, as a deliberate mechanism to generate incentive funds from forest carbon stock, which would be received through the FCPF/REDD+’s Readiness Carbon Fund.

He added that the training would prepare all concerned stakeholders for the benefits of planting more trees and the financial gains attached to stocking carbon, thereby boostisng forestry development, improving the State’s environmental stability, as well as enhance its socio-economic development.
