A team of operatives attached to the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit has been arrested over alleged collection of N100,000 bribe from a female traffic offender.
The culprit, one Didi Ekanem was alleged to have driven against traffic popularly refered to as “one way”.
She was said to have transferred the sum to the account of the leader of the team, one DSP Popoola Kayode via bank transfer before her vehicle a Venza marked APP 775GJ was released to her.
The team, as gathered had arrested the offender for driving against traffic (one-way) around Lekki – Ajah expressway on Wednesday, November 18, 2020.
However, rather than report the matter to the appropriate quarters, the lady granted an interview with the Punch Newspaper,, dated. 22nd November, 2020, captioned” TASKFORCE COMMANDER MADE SEXUAL ADVANCES AT ME”–DIDI EKANEM.
Consequent upon the publication, the matter was Investigated, leading to the arrest of the members of the team.
The chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi confirmed the report, saying the leader of the team and his members have been arrested and queried by him.
In a statement by Adebayo Taofiq, Head, Public Affairs. Unit made available to newsmen, Egbeyemi said all the operatives would be sent back to the Lagos Police Command for further disciplinary actions.
The release reads “The attention of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) has been drawn to the above-captioned story published on page 31 of the Sunday Punch Newspaper, dated 22nd of November, 2020.
Sequel to the report the Chairman of the Agency CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi immediately investigated the matter and discovered that the vehicle (Venza APP 775 GJ) was arrested for driving against traffic (one-way) around Lekki – Ajah expressway by the enforcement team of the Agency on Wednesday, 18th of November, 2020.
The investigation revealed further that the vehicle was impounded and brought to the Agency’s car park at Alausa, Ikeja.
The Leader of the team DSP Popoola Kayode who is not the ‘COMMANDER’ of the Agency as quoted inside the report collected the sum of N100,000 (One hundred thousand Naira) via bank transfer on his account before he released the vehicle to the owner (Didi Ekanem).
The leader of the team and his members of his team have been arrested and queried by the Chairman, while they would be sent back to the Lagos Police Command for further disciplinary actions.
The Agency thereby warned motorists particularly private car owners and motorcycle operators to desist from driving against traffic (one-way) as anyone caught would be charged to the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecution.
According to Egbeyemi “Members of the public should stop inducing our officers with money and be reminded that both the giver and receiver are liable in Law. It is only Court that pronounces traffic fines and money paid into government purse”.
The Agency, however, urged members of the public to always report any corrupt officer who engages in shady deals thereby spoiling the image of the Agency for disciplinary actions”.
