Bogoro Local Government Council in Bauchi State has validated 356 communities for sustaining Open Defecation Free (ODF) status in the local government area, according to the council’s Executive Chairman, Hon. Iliya Habila Stated this during the celebration of World Toilet Day on Thursday in Bogoro.
Habila assured the people of the area that the council will sustain the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status it achieved recently, as it would also make efforts to ensure that the gains in the validation exercise carried out is recorded.
According to him, “We would sustain the ODF to ensure a clean hygiene and healthy environment”, pointing that the efforts of the council had yielded fruits as about 8,000 latrines were improved across the 13 wards in the area,
The Bogoro Council Chief who said that strategies had been put in place to scale up the unimproved latrines in the area, puts it thus “The LGA has planned to scale up its activities to ensure that unimproved latrines are improved through sustained advocacy, awareness campaigns and provision of basic items for water and sanitation.
Hon. Iliya assured that the Council will also strengthen the sanitation committee which includes traditional rulers, religious leaders, managers of the Education sector and other stakeholders in the area.
He explained that activities for this year’s celebrations were held in some primary schools in the area to sensitize pupils and teachers on the use of latrines and the need to sustain the validation successes recorded in the area.
Habila opined that to ensure sustainability of the ODF status, the council will continue to provide toilets in public places such as markets and motor parks, and enjoined religious leaders to ensure that such facilities were provided in churches and mosques.
Hon. Iliya Habila reiterated the commitment of the Bogoro Local Government Council to ensure a clean and healthy environment for the citizens.
