Following protest by staff of the University of Ibadan on the selection process of the next Vice Chancellor of the University , the process was on Wednesday afternoon suspended.
The University’s staff on Wednesday morning embarked on a protest alleging plans to impose new Vice Chancellor on the University against the popular wish of the University Community
Specifically, the protesting staff were alleging plan to impose the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Kayode Adebowale as the next VC, adding that the outgoing VC has allegedly skewed the process in Adebowale’s favour.
Chairman of the Non Academic Staff Union of the University, Mr. Malachy Etim, while speaking on the protest said the union resolved into making its grievances known since “the process of selection of vice-chancellor for the university has been very faulty from the beginning.
“They want to impose a candidate on us through this faulty process and we are saying we cannot accept any imposition.Yes, we have had an internal crisis before, but the one that triggered today’s protest is the selection process”, he said
“We are holding our congress right away and shall come up with a position in the event that the committee announces the candidate we think it wants to impose on us,’’
The Chairman Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities , (SSANU) , Mr. Wale Akinremi on his part alleged that members of the screening committee elected internally “got there through manipulated and fraudulent electoral process’’.
“We will never work with the candidate they plan to impose on us. We have even locked the varsity’s gate.We must restart the process. Prof. Idowu Olayinka, the sitting vice-chancellor, must hand over to an acting vice-chancellor,’’.
During the protest, the staff blocked all main entrances into the University campus condemning the alleged plan imposition of a new Vice Chancellor for the University.
