It was confusion galore in Ogbomoso town on Sunday as angry youth attacked and vandalized the palace of the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi as the EndSARS protest entered the second day in the town.
The youth were said to be protesting the killing of one of them, Isiaka Jimoh allegedly by a policeman they identified as Ayeni on Saturday during EndSARS protest in the town.
Trouble started when the protesting youth were reportedly joinned by some people suspected to be hoodlums and stormed the Soun of Ogbomoso palace few minutes after the arrival of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Sunday Dare into the palace .
The Minister who hails from the town was said to have arrived the palace to brief the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi of the outcome of his visits to the family of late Isiaka Jimoh as well as others injured during the Saturday’s protest
The protesting youth were said to be chanting songs condemning the said policeman, Ayeni as well as demanding his arrest over the shooting of Isiaka Jimoh to death during the Saturday protest.
At this juncture, sources close to the palace said all the gates leading to the palace were shut to prevent the protesters from taking the protest into the palace but that some suspected hoodlums among the protesters scaled the palace fence and the gates and destroyed property worth millions of Naira as they broke into the living room and adjoining rooms in the palace hauling stones at those in the palace.
The Secretary to Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi, Mr Toyin Ajamu while speaking with the New Nigerian, described the attack on the palace as unfortunate blaming it on those he referred to as hoodlums.
Mr Ajamu disclosed that Oba Oyewunmi on hearing about the Sunday’s protest immediately dispersed some of his High Chiefs and himself to appeal to the protesters to give peace a chance only for the protesters to turn down the appeal to them by the Soun’s delegation, come back and attack the palace .
“To prevent the matter from degenerating, Kabiyesi directed some of his chiefs to appease the protesters but they started stoning whoever came their way and threw tyres into the station. The Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare visited the palace shortly before the attack on the palace while returning from the visit to the family of the deceased. They shattered windscreens of vehicles in the palace, vandalised the palace and burnt down a motorcycle.” he said
Mr Ajamu added, “we were only saved because there were burglar proofs on the windows. Nobody was injured but about 10 vehicles were vandalised, including the vehicle of Chairman. Christian Association of Nigeria, Ogbomoso North Zone, Rev. Tayo Adeyanju. The police were running for dear life so they couldn’t respond on time.
“Luckily, Kabiyesi escaped because the meeting was being held at the dinning section and not the sitting room. The protesters were not able to get to where the meeting was being held.”
