Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has stressed the need for journalists in the country to assist and support security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to overcome security challenges facing the nation.

“We have a number of issues on our front banner as journalists, that is the issue of rape and other gender based violence against women, and I want to challenge my colleagues to contribute in fighting these menace”.

He was speaking while declaring open the North East Zonal meeting of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Press Centre, Bauchi, where he urged journalists to fully participate in the campaign against all forms of rape and gender-based violence in the country.

The Governor explained that journalists as the watch dog of the society have a crucial role to play in reducing the number of rape cases and other gender based violence in the society.

Bala told the meeting opening ceremony besieged by almost all working journalists in Bauchi that, “Our current NUJ President Mr. Chris Isiguzo is a vibrant President and I believe under his leadership, the integrity of journalism profession would be enhanced”.

He succinctly puts it thus, “I want to say that, in Governor Bala Mohammed your colleague and our leader, you have a noble partner that will help in uplifting the NUJ to the greater heights”.

The Governor who was represented by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Bauchi, Dr. Ladan Salihu, pledged his continued support to the NUJ for the welfare and wellbeing of its members in the state.

Bala enumerated the achievements recorded by the present administration in the state in the areas of infrastructure, agriculture, health and education, saying the Kauran Bauchi administration is working assiduously to ensure effective service delivery in all the sectors of the state’s economy.

The NUJ National President, Mr. Chris Isiguzo has in a keynote address, expressed gratitude to Governor Bala Mohammed for the support being extended to journalists not only in the state, but across the country.

Mr. Chris Isiguzo appealed to the Governor to provide hecters of land to NUJ in the state to construct housing units for its working journalists so as to overcome their housing needs.

“Your Excellency, each time we gather like this, it affords us the opportunity to look around and see what is going on as enshrined in the constitution to hold government accountable. We have inspected and we have seen the projects that have direct bearing on the lives of the people of the state embarked upon by your administration.”

“We appreciate what you are doing in Bauchi and for the support extended to journalists across the country, Your Excellency, we remain grateful for that.”

The Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, Comrade Mukhtar Gidado had earlier alongside National officers of the NUJ inspected some projects of Governor Bala Mohammed within Bauchi metropolis.
