Nigeria Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) has developed a molecular test kit for Novel Coronavirus disease (COVID19) that can give results in less than 40 minutes.

Minister of State for Health, Dr. Olorunimbe Mamora, disclosed the invention at Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 (PTF COVID-19) media briefing on Tuesday, the media department of Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) reported on the ministry’s twitter handle yesterday.

“It is the SARS-COV-2 Isothermal Molecular Assay (SIMA) which can be performed by low skilled personnel with minimum training.

“This test kit which is ten times cheaper than the PCR can be deployed for point of care detection and surveillance,” Mamora explained.

Mamora, therefore, renewed  his appeal to state governments to continue to ensure that Nigeria steps up case findings, sample collection and testing.
He said that it is only by testing that the country can identify those with the infection for isolation and treatment.

The minister of State for health declared: “Our goal is to have at least one standard infectious disease centre in every state.

“We shall therefore work with states to establish purpose-built treatment centres that will ensure we are better prepared for infectious disease outbreaks in the country.”
