The Dr. Qasim Campaign Organization in the forthcoming Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos Council Election has vowed to notify all security agencies of an evil plot by the National Leadership of the Union to create chaos and install illegal Caretaker Committee to run the affairs of the Council.
It also accused the NUJ leadership of clearing people who do not posses the required certificates to contest election in Lagos Council.
Addressing a press conference Wednesday in Lagos, Director General of the Organization Mr. Fabian Anawo said Lagos Journalists would not fold their arms and allow anybody plunge Lagos NUJ into crises.
” We are not taking anything to chances. We will put security agencies on notice over the evil plot of the National leadership of the NUJ to create chaos and install an illegal Caretaker Committee.
We will not fold our arms and allow anybody to plunge Lagos NUJ into crises. That is why we are notifying the security agencies to nip the plan in the bud”, the DG of Organization asserted.
Anawo also accused the National leadership of the Union of disregard for the constitution of the Union, alleging that it installed Caretaker Committee in Ogun and Delta State Councils in violation of the constitution.
He said his organization is aware of move by the National leadership of the Union to hide under the proposed nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to postpone the election indefinitely and install a Caretaker Committee in Lagos.
The Campaign Organization DG therefore warned that Lagos journalists will resist any such attempt.
” It may interest us to note that the National leadership of our Union no longer have respect for the Constitution. If it does, it will not install a Caretaker Committee in Ogun and Delta State councils. If it does, it will not clear people who do not posses the required certificates to contest election in Lagos Council.
We are aware of the ploy to hide under the proposed nationwide strike called by the NLC and TUC, to postpone the Lagos NUJ election indefinitely and install a Caretaker Committe in Lagos.
We hereby warned that Lagos journalists will resist any such attempt”.
Speaking further, Anawo advised the NUJ leadership to toe the path of honour by extending the tenure of the present Exco in line with the doctrine of necessity as in the case with the National Association of Women Journalists ( NAWOJ) in the event that the election could not hold.
” In the event that the election could not hold, under any guise, rather than putting in place an illegal Caretaker Committee, the tenure of the present EXCO should be extended in line with the doctrine of necessity as is the case with NAWOJ”, he implored.
