The University College Hospital (UCH), Chairman of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), Dr.Adeolu Alli on Tuesday defended the on going 7 days warning strike embarked upon by the union..
Speaking with newsmen in Ibadan, Dr Alli who hinted that the strike has so far recorded over 80 percent compliance pointed out that the warning strike became necessary in view of the unfolding events in the heath sector in Nigeria in the recent times .
The UCH JOHESU Chairman stressed that it was unfortunate that salaries of their colleagues were adjusted twice last year with nothing done to theirs for the past years, saying the government “is discriminating in the payment of COVID – 19 allowance payment which supposed not to be as all health workers are equally exposed to the pandemic
“We want to plead with Nigerian populace to bear it with us, this strike is necessary for our demands to be met. We have been pushed to the wall, the government had earlier had an agreement with us in September 2017, May 2018, and there was a court judgement in December 2018 which all are yet to be implemented”, he said.
The JOHESU Chairman added, “we understand the plight of Nigerians, that is why we embarked on seven days strike, if not for that, we would have embarked on total strike, we know that UCH remain a rally point for patient in this state and Nigeria as a whole”.
“We are law abiding and what we are doing now is just a warning strike which is going to expired next week Monday, and we are going to pursued our demands lawfully. We don’t have any problem with UCH management because this is a national issue between the federal government and the leaders of our union at the national level.
He listed the demands of the striking health workers to include: payment of the shortfall arising from the implementations of COVID -19 special inducement and hazard allowance, payment of all withheld salary of member at JUTH, Federal Medical Center Owerri, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, including April and May 2018 salaries, adjustment of CONHESS salary structure, implementation of ADR consent judgement, structural and infrastructural decay.
