The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara state has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu to set up inquiry committee to investigate continued harassment of APC members and supporters in the state.
Addressing a press briefing on Monday at the party’s secretariat in Gusau, the chairman of the party, Alhaji Lawal Muhammad Liman said the call becomes imperative to save APC members and supporters from further humiliation in the hands of the police in the state.
“We call on all authorities to intervene. In fact it will be nice and important for the Inspector General of Police to set up a committee of inquiry so as all these issues can be investigated because all our complaints written to CP are not being attended to,” he said.
Liman alleged that the state commissioner of Police, Barrister Usman Nagogo has become partisan and currently working to strangulate oppositions in the state.
“We all know the constitutional role of every police officer is to ensure the protection of lives and property of every citizen irrespective ethnic, religious, economic and political status,” he said.
The APC chairman also alleged that the Saturday night arrest of a chieftain of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed Dantabawa and 17 others by the police was part of grand design by the police with a view to give the PDP upper hand in the forthcoming State Assembly bye election for Bakura constituency and the 2023 general elections.
Liman said despite the political victimization of APC members in the state, the party will remain resolute in its bid to win all subsequent elections in the state as the state is a APC state.
He said the party members will remain law abiding citizens and therefore warned members to shun any act capable of breaching law and order in the state.
A statement by the Zamfara state police command, Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), SP Mohammed Shehu said that the arrest of Dantabawa and others was an intelligent driven and proactive action by the state police command to prevent a possible breach of public peace and ensure that the state continue to enjoy the relative peace that is been enjoying in the recent time.
“The Zamfara State Police Command wishes to state categorically clear that the arrest of Alhaji Habu Mohammed Dantabawa and 17 others by operatives of the command on Saturday 12th September, 2020 was not politically motivated,” he said.
It will be recalled that a chieftain of the party, Alhaji Dabtabawa and 17 others were arrested on Saturday and released unconditionally on Sunday.
