A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, Abubakar Mohammed Dantabawa has vowed to sue Zamfara State Police Commissioner for illegal detention and infringement on his fundamental human rights as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Dantabawa who briefed journalists at his residence in Gusau on Monday chided the police commissioner, Usman Nagogo for throwing legality to the dustbin by acting on the script of the PDP led state government to be harassing and intimidating oppositions in the state.
He said he had written the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu and other relevant authorities to ensure that justice is done.
“I am going to sue the police commissioner and the state government for detaining me without any reason. I am an indigene of Zamfara state and a politician, so nobody can intimidate or harass me”.
” I will take legal action against the police commissioner as well as the state government in order to fight for my rights,” he fumed.
Dantabawa who is a strong ally of former Governor Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar alleged that the circumstance that led to his illegal arrest on Saturday night and subsequent release on Sunday clearly showed that the police commissioner was acting on the instructions of the state government.
The APC stalwart explained that on Saturday night, he and some people from his village, Gada in Bungudu local were holding meeting to plan on how to distribute the financial assistance which je wanted to give some people affected by recent flood when stern looking policemen stormed his house to arrest him and about 17 others without showing arrest warrant.
“The policemen took me to the police headquarters and detained me without telling me my offence but surprisingly after over 7 hours, they asked me to get somebody to sign my unconventional bail,” he said.
Dantabawa also alleged that N20 million which was meant for distribution as palliative to his people affected by flood were taken away by the police who came to arrest him.
Meanwhile, in a statement by the Zamfara state police command, Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), SP Mohammed Shehu said that the arrest of Dantabawa and others was an intelligent driven and proactive action by the state police command to prevent a possible breach of public peace and ensure that the state continue to enjoy the relative peace that is been enjoying in the recent time.
“The Zamfara State Police Command wishes to state categorically clear that the arrest of Alhaji Habu Mohammed Dantabawa and 17 others by operatives of the command on Saturday 12th September, 2020 was not politically motivated,” he said.
