The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), has again demonstrated its resolve to save the lives of Nigerians as the four containers of substandard cables worth of millions of naira seized recently were destroyed.
Speaking while destroying the millions of naira worth of substandard and unwholesome products at the destruction site ,the Director in charge of compliance and inspectorate,Engr. Obiora Manafa said that in as much as SON does not take delight in destroying seized sub standard goods due to its multifaceted implications including destruction of the nation scarce foreign reserves, it nonetheless cannot allow such goods to find their way into the market as they pose danger to consumers lives and properties.
Manafu,who supervised the destruction ,stated that the substandard cables were seized during operatives raids on warehouses across lagos state .
According to him,”you know we are not in the ports,the points of entry into the country, so we depends on our intelligence network”.”When we get information that a warehouse is keeping cable,we go there and carry out test on the cables and if found wanting,we seal the warehouse until we evacuated the products to our warehouse for further tests”,he said.
He added that ,made in Nigeria cables are the best because the manufacturers adhere to the regulations of standards, noting that some of the imported cables meet standards and are safe for use.
Manafa,noted that ,with the cooperation of Nigerians, the battle will be over soon,stressing that tremendous success is being achieved in the implementation of conformity Assessment programs.
He concluded that SON was disheartened with the continuous waste of the county’s resources through destruction of substandard goods.
To avoid further destruction and fast track businesses, the Director in charge of compliance and inspectorate advised importers and manufacturers to contact SON for specification of any products to be imported,to guarantee compliance.
