A middle aged house wife, Fatima Umar and her teenage daughter, Hauwa Umar have died in a boat mishap in the river New Aworo in Borgu, Niger State following massive flooding of the River New Aworo.
The victims were returning home from their farm after a heavy downpour and deluge of flood waters which swelled up their river and areas of its shoreline.
Sources from the council area, Borgu said authorities at the Kainji Hydro Electric Dam have compounded the problem of the deluge by opening the vaults of the dam reservoir to release excess water from their facility following weeks of heavy downpour which led to massive flooding of villages adjourning the Dam and the rivers in the area.
The mother and her daughter were paddling out on the flooded water when strong waves of the flood waters drove them deeper into the boisterous waves which carried them further away as the boat capsized with them mid stream while they made frantic efforts to stay afloat but to no avail.
Disaster Officer of Borgu council area, Musa Sa’idu Kidada confirmed that the victims were trying to escape the increasing volume of water on the River New Aworo following the release of water from the Kainji Dam but ran into strong water current.
Musa Sa’idu added that days of torrential rains had meant the water reservoir at the hydro dam had filled up and the excess water was released to the environment hence the massive flooding experienced in the area.
The flood according to him had destroyed farmlands, swallowed up homes and other buildings in Aworo village, Babbanna, Tudun Wadata, Mai Mangoro, Kurwasa villages and other communities.
The authorities at the Kainji Hydro Electric Dam had since the beginning of the rains issued standing warning against impending heavy floods this year and advised communities to avoid the waterways from the month of August.
