Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Yakubu Suleiman has assured that the legislature will do everything within their constitutional power to ensure justice is served for rape victims in the State.
He gave the assurance Thursday when the Assembly received members of Northern Alliance for Youth and Development who marched to the House to protest the rape of a four-year-old girl by a 50-year-old man in Bauchi at the Assembly Complex.
Speaker Suleiman who commended the Group for their concern on the victim, informed them that apparent to the rising cases of rape and other forms of violence against persons in the State, the House has already passed Violence Against Person Prohibition Bill and Governor Bala Mohammad has already signed the bill into law.
He assured the Alliance that the House of Assembly will exercise its constitutional power of oversight to ensure the provisions of the law are being implemented to the letter
On the rape of a minor at Wunti Street of Bauchi Metropolis, the Speaker recalled that the State Assembly has reacted to the barbaric act by condemning it during its plenary few hours after the incident.
The Speaker said that the House has sent a delegation led by himself to console the victim and her family and mandated its Committee on Women Affairs to follow up the case to ensure justice for the victim.
On the request of the group that the rapist of the minor be brought to the House for sentence, the Speaker told the them that the constitutional power of the Assembly is to make laws not to implement them, hence it will only follow up the case to ensure the police take the rapist to court for justice.
Speaker Suleiman urged the group to be law abiding and not to take laws into their hands, as the House will make sure Police and Courts have done the right thing on the matter.
Speaking earlier, the leader of the group, Comrade Najeebu Muazu said they marched to the House to express their total dismay on the rape of a four-year-old girl in Bauchi Metropolis and other rape cases in the state and request the support of the legislators to ensure justice for the victim.
Comrade Najeebu who commended member representing Bauchi Central Constituency, Hon. Jamilu Umaru Dahiru for bringing the matter during the House’s plenary, lamented how the accused person who is a serial rapist was pardoned two times while serving jail terms for rape in 2001 and 2020.
“In so many instances rapist will rape a girl and Security Agencies will arrest him but after some days or months, he will be released.
“As our fathers and leaders, we urge you to wipe away our tears by ensuring rapists serves appropriate sentence. We also want you to bring this rapist who raped a minor in Bauchi to the House and sentence him. We don’t want see him in the society again”, Najeebu demanded.
Also Speaking, a woman activist, Khadija Musa lamented that women are living in fear due rising cases of rape in the state to the level that they are afraid to go out of their houses for fear of being raped.
She therefore urged the State Assembly to come to their aid by ensuring rapists serve appropriate punishments to serve as deterrent to others.
