Traders from across Oyo State on Tuesday at a press conference in Ibadan declared that Alhaji Sumaila Jimoh is the authentic Babaloja of Oyo State.
Addressing journalists at the Oyo State NUJ press centre, the traders numbering hundreds under the umbrella of Coalition of Market Groups in Oyo State vowed to resist the alleged imposition of a Babaloja on traders in the state
According to their spokesman and President of the Joint Traders Association, Alhaji Dauda Oladapo, the alleged imposition of Chief Yekini Abass as Babaloja by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, cannot stand
Alhaji Oladapo disclosed that it was the prerogative of traders from across Oyo state to appoint the Babaloja of the state and not the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji.
He pointed out that it was surprising to discover that “Oba Adetunji allegedly unilaterally nominated and imposed Chief Abass as Babaloja.”
According to Alhaji Oladapo all the traders from the length and breadth of the state would not accept the imposition as “Chief Jimoh is the validly nominated Babaloja”.
“The only Babaloja in the making, following due process and who was collectively nominated, and supported by us is Alhaji Sumaila Aderemi Jimoh. He possesses over 50years of market leadership experience and his currently the Babaloja of Bodija market in Ibadan.”, he said
Alhaji Oladapo added, “please, let us be guided. We will keep the public in know of the next development and the line of action as at when due,”
Speaking further, the spokesman expressed the coalition’s continued support for the administration of Governor Makinde.
He emphasized that the traders appreciated the governor for his tremendous contributions to the association and the state, saying, “we quite know that our governor is a fundamental governor who will not at anytime support unnecessary things or support anything that is not constitutional. We are solidly in support of his administration. We are in support of his government and pray always for his success,”
The South-West Coordinator, National Association of Nigerian Traders(NANT), Mrs Odunayo Danjuma asked the appropriate authorities in the state to be wary of imposition of market leadership, saying, “imposition is assassination of democracy”.
“Imposition is a rape to democracy. We nominated the Babaloja of Oyo State in person of Alhaji S.A Jimoh.Jimoh is well acceptable by traders in the 33 local governments in the state. Over 2.5 million members nominated him,” she said.
