Protesters from across Oyo State comprising of students, members of the civil societies and some traders on Tuesday staged protest in some parts of Ibadan over the hike in price of petrol and the increment in electricity tarrif .
As early as 7.30am, the protesters stormed the Federal Secretariat in Ibadan for the commencement of the protest after which they moved to the Bodija junction to address the people on the need to reject the hike and increment.
The protesters handed down ultimatum to the Federal government to reverse the hike and increment on or before next Monday, stressing that the increment and hike was nothing but “wicked and lacked sound judgment”.
National Coordinator of  All Workers Convergence (AWC), Comrade Andrew Emelieze while addressing the rally charged Nigerians to stop expressing their grievances on internet or social media whenever their rights are being tampered adding that the protest was meant to show the displeasure of Nigerians to  the increments in petroleum price and electricity tariff, saying, it is now time for Nigerians  to come out and speak against all forms of oppression instead of expressing their grievances on the social media.
Comrade Emelieze maintained that the time has come for Nigerians to come out and speak against all forms of oppression, adding, ” it is high time the masses come out to protest against the price of petroleum and electricity tariff that was recently increased.”
” Nigeria government is torturing the citizens with the new increments,. We are here today with the Nigerian students. We are here today saying, no to high increment. We are here to day no to fuel and electricity tariff increments. We are here to say no to bad to bad governance. And we are calling on all Nigerians. We should not just protest on the internet”, he said.
Comrade Emelieze added, “we should come out to protest on the streets. We cannot continue to mortgage our future. Enough is enough. The Nigerian government is torturing us and that is why we are saying that this one must stop. And we are giving them ultimatum, by the special grace of God, no matter the negotiation they will have with Trade Union Congress, Nigeria Labour Congress”.
“We are giving them ultimatum that if they failed to do the needful we will embark on sit at home. If they fail to bring down the price of petroleum and electricity tariff, we are calling on all Nigerians that by Monday we will start to observe sit at home.Let  everybody sit at home, markets would be shut down, schools that are no longer in session will also be shut down. Every other would be shut down from Monday of they failed if the price of petroleum and electricity tariff is not reverted”.
Chairman, Joint Campus Committee of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Mayowa Opakunle, said students in Oyo state and beyond totally rejected the increment in the prices of petrol and electricity.
“We are out on the streets to register our grievances and show our displeasure at the wicked policies and unjust treatment of Nigerians by the Federal Government. We say no to fuel price hike and electricity tariff increment at this period when many people have lost their jobs, many have not even been paid salaries for the past six months.” he said.
Comrade Opakunle added, “prices of food, other goods and services have continued to increase while salaries are either being slashed into half for so many while others don’t even get at all.But despite these hardships, the government has continued to increase prices of commodities. The consistent show of ineptitude and cluelessness on the part of the President and his cabinet is worrisome,” Opakunle
