Nasarawa State House of Assemby has assured the state government and other partners of its readiness to support nutritional activities in order to tackle malnutrition among children in the state and the country at large.
The Speaker of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, gave the assurance during a one-day Nutritional stakeholders workshop organized by the state government in collaboration with Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) in Akwanga LGA of Nasarawa State.
Balarabe Abdullahi said such support would also improve on the standard of living of the children, thereby making them morally sound,healthy and grow to be productive in the society.
The speaker, who was represented by his deputy, Hon Tsentse Nehemiah Dandaura said that the House will not only approve nutrition budget but would ensure that such budget is fully implemented for the benefit of the children and the society at large.
“I want to commend the organizers of this workshop as this workshop is timely considering the importance of nutrition to our children and for societal development.
“There is no reasonable person that will take nutritional activities for granted.
“I want to assured that the House will give its adequate support to the issue of nutrition in the area of budget provision and to ensure its implementation for the benefit of our children.
“We will ensure that what is budgeted is not just approved but if need be increases, released and implemented so that our children will get good nutrition in the interest of their health and for the overall development of the state and the country”. he said.
Balarabe Abdullahi added that such implementation of the nutritional budget would be achieved through oversight function by members and encouraged more efforts in effective school feeding programmes.
As representatives of the people,the speaker restated the House continued determination to make good laws and pass resolutions that would have direct impact on the lives of the people.
Declaring the workshop open, Pharm. Ahmed Baba Yahaya, the State Commissioner of Health said that the workshop was aimed at discussing way forward on how to improve on the nutritional activities in the state.
Baba Yahaya- said that the importance of nutrition to children and societal development could not be overemphasized, hence the need for the workshop.
He emphasized that the workshop was designed for the lawmakers and other critical stakeholders considering their positions and role in the state noting that their inputs will go a long way in meeting the target as according to him what one eats determines his productivity hence the need to ensure that children as leaders of tomorrow are well taking care of especially in terms of feeding which he described as synonyms to good health.
He appreciated members of the House for attending the workshop and for always give their support to the activities of the ministry and called for its sustenance.
The commissioner restated the state government continued commitment to initiate good policies and programmes that would improve on the lives and health of the children and the people of the state.
Earlier, Dr Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan,Director Public Health of the State Ministry of Health and Mr Iliyasu Salihu Tunga, the Nasarawa State Coordinator of Acelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) said that the project focuses on interventions to prevent malnutrition ,especially in the first 1000 days of life of a child and the need for relevant stakeholders to key in and support the success and sustainability of the programme considering its benefit in the society especially among children.
They observed that Nigeria has a serious problem of malnutrition, adding that about 43.6% of children under five years stunted hence the need for more efforts in that regards.
