The Kaduna State Commissioner, Ministry of Education, Alhaji Shehu Usman Muhammad has called on teachers in the state to always give assignments with references to text books in order to encourage reading culture among children.
He made the call when he received text books presented to the state government by the president of the Nigeria Foolery Society, Dr Bukar Usman, saying that reading habit among students has gone so low with the appearance of social media and google, stressing that such must be checked.
According to him, most timed assignments are given to students, they will Google it and they will end up giving trash as such, the teacher should discourage that by ensuring that the relevant text books are consulted.
He also urged schools owners and teachers to make the relevant text books available and accessible to students at all times in good numbers for easy use.
The commissioner while commending the presenter of the text books, said they will be placed in the library for academic purposes.
He however, called on local writers to write books to enable children read books that are written by the people they know which will be very exciting as well as urged individuals with good text books to also donate to the state government.
Earlier, Dr. Bukar Usman while presenting the text books said the presentation was aimed at encouraging students in the state.
Dr. Usman who is a retired permanent secretary and who was represented by a veteran journalist, Magaji Mohammed, said that he extends his donation of text books to various schools in the state.
