The Nigeria Customs Ogun Area 1Command has detected new methods used by the smugglers to smuggle petroleum products, import rice
and other contraband products into the country has been bursted.
The Area Controller of the Command, Comptroller Michael Agbara revealed this saying, smugglers have adopted using extra petrol tanks built locally inside boths of their vehicles to carry out anti bunkry activities and used palm oil kegs to sumgle rice into the country.
Agbara said each extra thanks can convincingly carry up to 2,000 litters of petrol which is five drums per trip and people will be wondering which road and how petrol passes to Benin Republic.
Briefing newsmen at Centry Idi-Iroko,Ogun Area 1 Command, Comptroller Agbara expressed shock at the method used by palm oil dealers to deceive officers on the road adding that they robbed their kegs with palm oil but inside the kegs contained rice
“Gentlemen of the press, it is a great pleasure to once again welcome you to Ogun State, Idiroko, the Headquarters of Ogun I Command for a strategic press conference in order to highlight our core activities on generation of revenue, suppression of smuggling, facilitation of trade and protection of the society.
“As you all know, that the border is still closed to Import/Export and this made our traditional revenue not feasible. However, we are able to generate some fees as stated below, from the sales of Petroleum products and other perishables that cannot be warehoused and total revenue collected was N19,598,500.00,” Agbara disclosed.
He also disclosed that during the period under review, the Command made 439 seizures comprising of 11,841 Bags of Foreign parboiled rice (50 kg each),130 units of vehicles including 2018 Model Black Mercedes Benz AMG G63, (Bulletproof)and 39 units of motorcycle (means of conveyance)
Others according to him, were 98 kegs of Vegetable oil (25 liters each),11 bales and 40 pcs of Secondhand clothing,100 pairs of used shoes,3,204 ctns of frozen poultry products,
98,200 liters of PMS (Petrol) ,
306 kegs of palm oil (25 liters each),1,950 liters of Diesel and 3,250 liters of Kerosene.
Agbara gave other seizures to include, 73 pcs of Handbags (New),33 ctns Body cream,
2 sacks of Margarine (Blue band),149 bags by 50kg and 3 ctns of Sugar,26 sacks of Kolanut,7 sacks of Bitter kola, 55 sacks of Cannabis sativa,
5 bundle and 9 pcs of Used tyres among others with the Total Duty Paid Value of above N500,766,215.
“The Command was able to achieve the aforementioned due to strategic enforcement measures put in place, despite increasing state of Covid-19 pandemic ravaging the Country.
“The Command will continue to dialogue, engage, sensitize and educate the public on social/economic implication of smuggling as well as performing statutory function of enforcing compliance in line with government fiscal policies.
“We wish to reiterate that the continued attack on operatives of NCS and other sister Agencies will not deter us from the continued performance of our legitimate duties. Permit me to use this opportunity to appeal to parent and guardians to prevail on their children, wards and youths to desist from such criminal acts as the NCS operatives in observance of the rules of engagement will be left with no choice than to defend their lives if attacked Agbara sounded a strong warning.
