Kaduna State Government, led by Malam Nasir Ahmed el-Rufai, is set to begin the registration of commercial vehicles in the state.
This was disclosed by Director of Finance and General Services of Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority, Lawal Usman Musa, in a stakeholders orientation meeting on registration of commercial vehicles in Kaduna State which took place on Tuesday 13th July, 2020 at the conference room of the agency.
Mr Lawal stated that the purpose of the sensitization meeting is to inform the general public and the operators of commercial vehicles in the state to know the government’s plan towards harmonizing and upgrading commercial operations in the state through the registration of these commercial vehicles.
He further said, “ the essence of this sensitization workshop is to brief the relevant MDAs regarding the registration exercise that the state intends to implement which has to do with registering all forms of commercial vehicles like buses, Kekes and anything that takes people commercially, so it is all about gathering data as well as trying to zone the different modes of transportation to particular locations”.
He added that the registration of this vehicles will enable them place ban on some vehicles from plying selected roads which will help in curtailing accidents.
“one of the advantages of this is to be able to curtail all the accidents on our roads because there are so many reports of accidents caused by Keke Operators due to reckless driving”.
Oham Bene Chinedu, a staff of the agency added that “the exercise will help the state in gathering data as well as zoning the different mode of transportations to particular locations. For example, the Kekes have a zonal system which they must abide by.
This will restrict their movement to a particular boundary as well as the buses have a particular road they have to ply on.
This is just to reorganize the public transport in Kaduna state and make each component complement each other to make the whole system efficient.
“The advantages of this whole exercise will give the city an urban look, as well as creating a background for a plan that the state has for the future regarding public transportation.
Secondly, it will help to get the state a data base because currently in Kaduna State there is no any database with regards to public transport.
Currently in Kaduna state nobody has an idea on who is plying what transport or who is supplying public transport in Kaduna.
Nobody knows how many commercial vehicles are in operation in Kaduna, nobody knows who owns these vehicles. It will also help the state to be able to make future plans” said Chinedu.
Representatives of MDAs at the sensitization meeting include the Kaduna State Traffic Law Enforcement Agency, Kaduna State Road Agency, National Institute of Transport Technology, Kaduna State Urban Development Agency among others.
