Scarcity Of Subsidized Fertilizers Hits Kano (Investigation)

Gombe State Governor, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya while flagging off 2020 fertilizer sales in the state.

Since the inception of the present administration, agriculture becomes one of the important sectors for excellent food production that is also expected to remain the nation’s economic mainstay as witnessed in almost every farm produce value chain.

However, the cost of agric inputs  especially chemical fertilizers has been one of the greatest obstacles that discourages farmers from venturing into various  agricultural production activities because the cost of production is over high.

As such, the federal government decided to make the fertilizer available at the subsidized rate of 5,500 per 50kg bag.

The provision of the said subsidized fertilizer has also encouraged the farmers where every peasant farmer affords to buy a bag of fertilizer and proceeds to farm, that brings bumper harvests at the end of the season in those years that resulted in the production of large quantity of different types of food items that are proudly of Nigeria.

Although the provision of subsidized fertilizer continues in the country, this year’s subsidy is quite different from that of the previous years, because those who are responsible to make the commodity available at Kano State Government’s retail stores are not doing well as observed by our correspondent who monitored how the sale of the fertilizer is being carried out.

One of the retail assistants who had a chat with New Nigerian on the condition of anonyminity said that, “we got supply but sincerely speaking, over half of the commodity is being sold to bussinessmen where they later sell a 50kg  bag between N6000 to N7000 instead of 5,000 to 5,500, which is a great sabotage to the government’s effort at making fertilizer available and at the subsidized rate.

Most of the farmers that had an interview with our correspondent called on the Kano State Government to monitor the activities of the fertilizer  retail stores across the state to ensure that a peasant farmer can get the available fertilizer at the subsidized rate as recommended by the government.
