The Rotary Club of Uyo, a humanitarian services club, has donated convenience facility tagged: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project to Government Technical College, Ewet in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.
The facility which includes six cubic toilet block, septic tank and reticulated water is meant to provide good sanitary and hygiene in the school’s compound.
At the commissioning of the project, the Commissioner for Education in the State Prof. Nse Essien described the donation of a six cubic toilet block, septic tank and reticulated water into the toilet as the best gift of the year in this period of COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the country.
Prof. Essien thanked the Rotary Club of Uyo for its timely intervention, saying that, the Club has lessen his burden by reducing the number of the facility which plans was on to provide same across schools in the state.
“The best gift anybody can receive this time of COVID-19 pandemic is the project of this nature, especially now that everybody is talking about sanitation and good hygiene. I am happy to be part of this epoch making ceremony; because I have been cracking my brain on how I would improve sanitary condition in all our schools and I think Rotary Club has actually helped us.
“We are very grateful and I know this project will serve us very well as students are coming back very soon, I am very grateful and my prayer is that God should replenished the purse of those that contributed to the realization of the project”, he said.
The government, he stressed, was happy with Rotary Club for the assistance, noting that, the project would serve the students and staff of the school.
The Education Boss called on well to do citizens of the state, corporate organizations and other stakeholders to always support government efforts at improving the educational sector of the state.
In his remarks, the Principal of the College, Mr. Udo David, commended the Rotary Club of Uyo for the donation, noting that, with staff strength of 94 and 38 non teaching staff and students’ population of 3,875, the toilet would certainly serve the population satisfactorily.
“I want to use this opportunity to express my heart warming appreciation to the Rotary Club for this project sited in this college. Let me state categorically that, the choice of this project is putting a round peg in a round hole. Thank you Rotary Club”, he said.
Also speaking, the District Governor of District 9142, RTN Sam Uko, reminded the school authority that, the cardinal duties of Rotary was that of serving humanity.
He said that, the attention of the Club was drawn to the school because of the number of students and such essential sanitary facility was not available, he therefore called on government to replicate the gesture to other schools in the state without such facility.
Earlier, the President of Rotary Club Uyo, RTN Idongesit Domingo-Inyang, thanked all those individuals, religious organizations, private and corporation for their kind donations which have led to the actualization of the project.
As one of the Club’s Service projects, she called on others in the state to support government as government alone cannot provide all by itself and thanked the commissioner for education, chairman, Technical school board for giving Rotary Club of Uyo the opportunity to touch lives of students of the college through the WASH project.
