COVID-19 Pandemic Stopping Us From Conducting Council Polls In Bauchi – Bala Mohammed

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has attributed the inability of his administration to conduct the local government election scheduled for June this year to the CoronaVirus pandemic. 

He was speaking while swearing-in four caretaker committee chairmen of Darazo, Kirfi, Tafawa Balewa and Ningi Local Government Areas in the state, however assuring that his government will conduct the councils’ polls as soon as the incident of COVID-19 is over.

It could be recalled that Local Government Councils elections in Bauchi state was scheduled to hold June 20, this year when Governor Bala while in quarantine over COVID-19 barely a month ago, directed for the postponement of the polls due to the pandemic.

The Governor explained that his administration was fully prepared to conduct Local Government election as soon as the incident of Covid-19 is over so that democracy can be deepened at the grassroots level. 

“Covid-19 pandemic halted the conduct of the local government election, but I can assure you that my administration is ever ready to conduct the elections”, he told the newly appointed council chairmen.

He further told the new chairmen, “Governance is not about Bala Mohammed, is not about you or anybody, it is about trust given to us by Allah. You know all the circumstances of coming into the office, I don’t want say anything less or insult anybody”

“I want you make sure you go back to your respective Local Government Areas and cooperate with stakeholders, the annuls of the local government, they are the people of the local government, the traditional rulers, the religious leaders and the electorates, make sure you carry them along”.

The governor expressed dismay that today outsiders or non-citizens are coming into the state, colliding with LG chairmen or forest officers and deforesting the forests, describing the trend as unacceptable, saying “Our environment is very dear to us”. 

To curb the spread of the pandemic, he said, the state government is set to produce ten million face masks for health workers, students, teachers and the most vulnerable in the state as part of strategies to control the spread of COVID-19 disease.

Senator Bala Bala then pledged to release funds for the procurement of face mask for distribution at community levels with a view to ensure that the face masks reaches the most vulnerable in the society.

The four caretaker committee chairmen were sworn -in by the Bauchi State Chief Judge, Justice Talatu Rabi Umar at the banquet hall, government house Bauchi. 

They include, Alhaji Saleh Abdu Nasaru (Ningi LGA), Alhaji Garba Musa Barra (Kirfi LGA), Alhaji Abbass Aliyu (Darazo LGA) and Mr. Daniel Danjuma Mazadu for Tafawa Balewa LGA.
