A philanthropic foundation in Bauchi, Nura Manu Soro Foundation has disbursed the sum of N17, 933, 449 scholarships to 4, 000 students who are indigenes of the state studying in 54 institutions across the country.
An Executive Committee member, Malam Mukhtar Jarmajo disclosed the scholarship awards to the students Thursday while addressing journalists on the activities of the foundation.
Jarmajo explained that the beneficiaries are students of Bauchi state origin in Islamiyyah schools, Primary and secondary schools, Higher Islamic and Tertiary institutions who have applied for the scholarships and successfully passed the screening exercise.
He said the scholarships which are purely for tuition fees is meant for students that secured admission into institutions but cannot pay registration fees and those who are already in schools.
“Both applications, selections and verifications are being carried out through a local committee. At the tertiary level, it includes students, religious leaders and representative from students’ affairs office, while at the basic education level, it made up of headmaster, PTA chairman and the child parent”.
Accordingly, “Further verification are carried out at the foundation secretariat. The foundation makes payment directly to the schools accounts and not individuals”.
Mr. Jarmajo stated that the foundation’s chairman, Alhaji Nura Manu Soro came up with the intervention in consideration of the poverty in the land and number of youths and children who dropped out of schools due to financial predicaments.
He said that the foundation is equipped with competent professionals with track records from the education world, and are expected to handle the continuous implementation of the framework to meet up the goals, values and aspirations of the foundation.
