President of Muaythai Federation of Nigeria (MFN), Comrade Paul Egonu has commended the Minister of Youth and Sports Development Sunday Dare for his positive response towards the plight of athletes in this trying times.
Comrade Egonu, said the minister’s kind gesture and foresight is worthy of emulation.
Sunday Dare directed the onward payment of funds into the accounts of Nigerian athletes to provide some relief in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The payments, which commenced on Wednesday, are being drawn from the Athletes Relief Fund established about two weeks ago by the Minister .
The sum of N50,000 is being paid into the direct accounts of each of the athletes from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) account of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
Over 200 athletes are expected to benefit from the fund.”with this move of paying athletes N50,000, it shows that the minister means well for sports men and women in the country.
This will spur the athletes to be more determined and focus in their quest to win more laurels for the country at major championships, ” Egonu said.
It would be recalled that the Minister had floated a relief fund for the athletes whose source of earning have ceased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic following the suspension of all major sporting events in the world.
Egonu stated that this will go a long to ease the untold hardship the sportsmen and woman were currently going through followingthe suspension of all sporting activities occasioned by the outbreak Coronavirus and subsequentlockdown.
He urged the athletes to continue to adhere to safety measures advised by medical experts to break the chain of infection of the virus by washing of hands regularly with soap and water or use of sanitizer, dispose of used tissue after sneezing or coughing and most importantly, stay home to stay safe and stay alive.
