Bauchi Confirms Two New Positive CoronaVirus Cases



The Ministry of Health in Bauchi State has revealed that a second suspected CoronaVirus case test came out positive.

Bauchi Commissioner of Health Dr. Aliyu Maigoro dropped the hint for the second coronaVirus infected person this evening while updating journalists on the pandemic.

Dr. Maigoro who declined to give name of the new victim said however that he is a 62 year old man and friend of the first patient (Governor Bala Mohammed).

He disclosed that 48 samples were taken out of which two were positive, 37 negative while results of nine others are still pending.

The commissioner explained that the two victims did not exhibit any sign or symptom of the disease, but have been isolated and are receiving care.

“The first index case (Governor Mohammed) is recovering fast and is doing extremely fine. And up to this moment, there is no sign or symptoms of COVID-19 on him except the confirmatory result. He is still in isolation and we are following the case management of this patient.

“The second case who is 62 years old is a friend to the first victim (Governor Mohammed), is also being isolated, he has already started receiving management as well as any other supportive case management. Apart from that, we are continuing with our other activities of surveillance and contact tracing.

“We’re tracing the primary contacts of the first case and we have taken their samples to Abuja to know their situation. We have started contacting the contacts of this second case and we are also going to take their samples based on the criteria for analysis.

Maigoro who said that only two cases are on admission, explained that three centers are being made ready to hold the patients.

According to him, the Bayara General Hospital, the State Specialist Hospital and the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, will be used for this purpose.

The Commissioner appealed to individuals, partners, corporate bodies and Non-Governmental Organizations to assist the state government with the required machines for the treatment of the disease which, he described as highly sophisticated and cannot be gotten in the area. 

Maigoro assured that government is on top of the situation, and implored people to regularly wash hands, takes too much water, eat fruits, and avoid unnecessary crowds.

They should also avoid touching of eyes, nose, mouth, coughing and sneezing in the midst of people, among some of the measures to avert the spread of the disease.

The commissioner similarly advised the public in the state to comply strictly to the guidelines on the disease control and provide useful information to the state response team on the pandemic.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (BASPHCDA), Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed said the second case also has secondary cases stating, “we don’t know how many people he has come in contact with.”

He said, “We want people to know that the state government is fully prepared to handle these cases in Bauchi state. the Commissioner of Health, the Chairman of the Task Force who is the Deputy Governor are not sleeping, we are actually not sleeping on this matter”.

“We are making sure that the second case we got just about two hours ago (4pm on Thursday), is admitted in the hospital so that we can manage him well and take care of him closely.”

The agency chairman therefore advised the public to maintain social distance and use facial masks and wash their hands with hand sanitizers always

Meanwhile, the Bauchi state government has ordered the closure of all offices except those who render essential services, markets with the exclusion of food sellers, filling stations and essential commodities sellers.

The government has in the same token directed road transport workers not to carry more than three passengers per vehicle, as they are also provide sanitizers in their cars.
