Katsina State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari has emphasized the need for collaboration with Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development for investments in the mining sub sector.
Alhaji Bello Masari was speaking when he received the Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr Okechukwu Samson who paid him courtesy call at Government House Katsina
He explained that the current economic downturn is not affecting only Nigeria, but globally which makes it imperative for the three tiers of government to resolve contentious issues for the country to harness the resources for economic growth and development.
He said although mineral resources have been placed in the exclusive list in the 1999 Constitution as amended, the land in which the mineral deposits are, belong to the state governments.
For an effective mining to take place, Governor Masari told the visiting Minister that the current insecurity has to be brought under control, a strong legislation, synergy between the tiers of government and a strong judicial system otherwise investors would not bring the needed capital.
He emphasized that, mining entails sinking heavy funds that could only start maturing after about twenty to thirty years of starting such an investment.
According to him, all hope was not lost with serious sensitization campaigns, the sector could be opened for investment.
Speaking earlier, Minister of State for Mining and Steel Development, Dr Okechukwu Samson told Governor Masari that he was in the state to kick start nationwide sensitisation campaigns on the diversification programme of President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration in the country.
Dr Samson who spoke at length on the activities of the ministry, emphasized the need for synergy between the federal government, states and local governments as well as traditional rulers to make the new Mining Act work in the country.
He called for the defreezing of mining fields in the state.
Katsina State Commissioner of Resources Development, Alhaji Abdullahi Imam disclosed that, the Masari administration has synergy with the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development on matters affecting the mining sector.
Alhaji Imam said already measures have been taken to stop illegal mining activities across the 34 local government areas in the state.
