United States of America based Nigerian Super heavyweight boxer, Raphael Akpojiori has declared that his target is to win an Olympic medal for the country at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics coming up later in the year.
The gangling boxer who was a former basketball player, before switching to the pugilist game, in 2016, said he has what it takes to pick one of the qualifying tickets in Senegal noting that he has been training under the watchful eyes of renowned boxing coach and former World champion, Glen Johnson in Miami, United States.
According to the former Ebun Comet, Lagos Islanders and University of Miami basketball player, the experience he has garnered as an amateur and professional boxer will help him in achieving his dream of winning medal at the Olympics.
‘ i’m ready physically, mentally and psychologically for the Olympic qualifiers in Senegal.Am not only going to Dakar to win a ticket to Japan, but i will follow it up with an Olympic medal which is the dream of every athlete.
” Right now, II’ve been training four hours a day under a renowned coach and former World champion, Glen Johnson and am confident of writing the name of Nigeria in gold in Japan.
The Edo State born pugilist who have a record of 14 fights, 13 wins and 1 loss as an amateur and have had six fights winning all by knockout since joining the paid ranks in 2018,, said his plans is to use the Olympic medal and make millions of down trodden Nigerians happy.
” My plan is that after picking the Olympic ticket, I will go back to Miami and concentrate on my training so as to be able to win a medal at the greatest sporting event in the World and put smiles on the faces of Nigerians as well as write the name of the country in the World sports map”, he concluded.
