President of Mainland Tenis Club, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, Chief Tochukwu Okeke has said that the target of the club this year is to help develop young talented players who will eventually win laurels for the country at international competitions.
He told our correspondent on Thursday that the club will soon come out with a programme of activities for the year which will include talent discovery and organising inter-club championship enable members compete favorably with members of sister clubs in the country.
” At Mainland Tennis Club, our target has always been to develop talents at the grassroots whom we will later help to become future champions in the racket game. We’ve been doing this for many years and this year won’t be an exemption”, he explained.
Okeke whose club has sponsored some Nigerian junior players for competitions overseas in the past, expressed happiness that most products of the club are now dominating the junior circuit not only in Nigeria but the West African sub- region noting that more will be done this year to encourage them to excel.
” Over the years, we’ve been sponsoring some of our young players to African and European countries to participate in some invitational championships and last year, we footed the bill of one of them that went to Norway to represent the country and am happy that these players have improved tremendously and are today dominating the junior circuit not only in Nigeria but the entire West Africa.He also announced that the club is in constant touch with sister clubs like Ikoyi Club, Lagos Island Club, Eko Club and Ibadan Tennis Club for an inter-club competition among members to enable them not only involve in healthy competitions but make more friends through the game.
