Adherents of different religions in Nigeria have been reminded of importance of peace and religious tolerance.
The Chief Imam of Sultan Bello Mosque Kaduna, Dr. Muhammad Suleiman Adam gave this reminder while speaking with newsmen at the venue of a consultative dialogue with religious leaders, convened at the instance of Kaduna State Peace Commission in Kaduna.
The cleric who identified peace and tolerance as prerequisites for societal development, enjoined Muslim leaders to always preach peace as commanded by Islamic religion.
Dr. Muhammad Adam noted that no society can prosper in an atmosphere of chaos and acrimony, hence the need for people to live in peace and be their brothers keeper.
He appealled to both Muslims are Christians in Kaduna state to eschew bitterness and embrace dialogue and tolerance in whatever they do to help uplift the state.
The chief imam who described the peace conference as vital to promoting peace and understanding among the followers of the two religions in the country, equally called on parents to preach peace to their wards for harmonious co-existence to prevail.
He commended the efforts of Kaduna state government for it’s concern and foresight in establishing the state peace commission for the purpose of promoting tolerance and religious harmony among the people.
Dr. Suleiman Adam said the idea came at the appropriate time when people in Kaduna state are in dire need of peace and harmonious co-existence.
He pointed out that in view of the heterogeneous nature of the state, it is incumbent upon the people to embrace peace and dialogue as the way out, saying that “if supported adequately, the commission would achieve the goals of promoting peace.”
On Sultan Bello Mosque Abubakar Gumi Foundation, Dr. Suleiman Adam said a lot of Muslims in and outside Kaduna State have been supporting the foundation which recently initiated a 20 years development plan.
According to him, some of the activities of the foundation include total renovation of Sultan Bello Mosque with provision of essential facilities, education, skills acquisition, training for physically challenged as well as support to various development initiatives to Muslim Ummah.
