Armed Bandits on rampage on Saturday sacked no fewer than five communities in Galadiman Kogo and Erena axis of Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State in the early hours of the day and left sorrow, tears and blood on their heels for the umpteen times.
The armed bandits in their tens, arrived on motorcycles and operated unchallenged as they unleashed mayhem on innocent, unsuspecting and defenceless citizens in the communities.
Casualty figures in human and material resources could not be immediately ascertained but sources within the raided communities confirmed that a woman who had recently delivered a baby was among those abducted.
At noon on Saturday, victims who had escaped to Kuta town, the headquarters of the council area were lamenting their ordeal and cursing the state government for its refusal to redress the continuous banditry in the area.
Armed banditry has become a near daily occurrence in communities of Shiroro, Munya, Rafi and recently Paikoro councils of the state.
Most victims from the areas often lament the state government’s lame approach to the recurring raids by bandits which have resulted in the sheer arrogance and recklessness of the armed bandits.
An elderly man from Erena who spoke to New Nigerian correspondent on phone but pleaded not to have his identity in print, recalled that a crime which started from Allawa ward in Shiroro Council Area, has for purpose of government’s condonation, lackadaisical attitude, ineffectiveness and double standards, has now consumed the eight wards in Lakpma axis.
Shiroro council has fifteen wards being the largest council area of the state.
The recurring attacks and raids in the area have made life unbearable for all the rural dwellers in the council area.
The development has since spread from Shiroro axis to Munya, Rafi and Paiko even as most villagers are now helpless and awestruck. “We are helpless, hopeless, and hapless. Our livelihood and ancestral home are all in jeopardy” said our source.
“If the primary purpose of government is to protect lives and properties of it’s citizens, ours has taken a different concept. This is disservice to the state and it’s people” he further added.
Raids on communities by armed bandits who are looking for food for their camps and for cash and women have been on the increase for over a year even as the state government keeps making promises of redressing the sad development but without any solution in sight thus leaving the communities not only traumatized but vandalized, victimized and vulnerable for repeated attacks and raids.
